Types of vaginal septa
| Septum | Description |
|---|---|
| Transverse vaginal septum | This is due to incomplete fusion of the mullerian duct and urogenital sinus. It presents as primary amenorrhea (”cryptomenorrhea”) due to uterine outflow obstruction – cyclical lower abdominal pain, amenorrhea, central pelvic mass (haematometra or haematocolpos). An incomplete septum may have oligomenorrhea, dyspareunia or obstetric complications. |
| Longitudinal vaginal septum | This is due to incomplete fusion and disolution of the tissue between the mullerian ducts. It may be associated with uterine septum or uterine didelphys, both of which may cause obstetric complications |
