Nitrates are drugs that are used for their vasodilating effects.

- Mechanism of action
- Converted to nitric oxide → activates GC which increases cGMP → smooth muscle relaxation → reduced afterload (arterial dilation) and preload (venodilation)
- This promotes an increase in cardiac output by reducing afterload.
- Adverse effects
- Hypotension
- Tachycardia
- Flushing
