Hypertrophic rhinitis is characterized by thickening of the nasal mucosa, submucosa, seromucinous glands, periostium, and bones. The changes are more marked on the turbinates.
- Causes
- Signs and symptoms
- Nasal obstruction
- Nasal discharge is thick and sticky
- Headache
- Heaviness of head
- Transient anosmia
- Physical examination
- Hypertrophy of turbinates
- Thick turbinal mucosa that does not pit on pressure
- Turbinates show little shrinkage with vasoconstrictor drugs due to the presence of underlying fibrosis
- The inferior turbinate shows the most changes (Mulberry appearance)
- Treatment
- Treat the underlying cause
- Reduction of the size of the turbinates. The various methods are:
- Linear cauterization
- Submucosal diathermy
- Cryosurgery of turbinates
- Partial or total turbinectomy
- Submucous resection of the turbinate bone
- Lasers have also been used to reduce the size of turbinates
