Pulmonary abscessAbscess of the pulmonary tissue. Predisposition in aspiration, loss of consciousness, poor dentition
PneumoniaInfection of the lung parenchyma
  • Symptom triad of respiratory infections
    • Fever (due to release of inflammatory mediators)
    • Cough (due to irritation of infected tissue)
    • Sputum (due to hypersecretion)

Common Causative Organisms

  • Acute bronchitis ***Similar to sinusitis
    • Streptococcus pneumoniae (40%)
    • Haemophilus influenzae (30%)
    • Moraxella catarrhalis (20%)
    • Others (10%)
  • Pulmonary abscess
    • Anaerobes +/- aerobes
  • Pneumonia
    • Streptococcus pneumonia (#1 Main Causative Organism)
    • Viruses
    • Mycoplasma pneumonia (Common in teenagers)
    • Chlamydia pneumonia
    • Hemohilius influenzae
    • Moraxella cattarhalis
    • Legionella pneumophila
    • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
    • Staphylococcus aureus
    • Pneumocystic jiroveci (HIV AIDS pts)
    • Coxiella burnetti (Exposed to sheep placenta)
    • Klebsiella pneumoniae (Alcoholics)
    • Francisella tularensis (Exposure to rabbits)
    • Fungal
    • Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS, Neonates by vertical transmission)
