Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is a skin infection caused by molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) – a DNA pox virus. It appears as skin-coloured white papules with central umbilication.

  • Transmission
    • Direct transmission by close personal contact
    • Indirect transmission via fomites such as shared towels and flannels
  • Signs and symptoms
    • Skin-coloured papules with central umbilication
      • Appears in clusters
      • Commonly in sites of apposition: the side of the chest, the inner arms, and in flexures
      • Spares the palms and soles
  • Treatment
    • Spontaneously resolves in 18 months
    • Cryotherapy or curettage for older children or adults
    • Topical agents such as imiquimod or salicylic acid
    • Treatment may be required for itching or infection
