Dyshidrotic eczema (Pompholyx)

Pompholyxis is a type of eczema that affects the hands and feet. It presents as pruritic vesicles affecting the palms (cheiropompholyx) and the feet (pedopompholyx)

  • Signs and symptoms
    • Rash
      • Sudden onset of intensely pruritic vesiclesbullae
      • Symetrical
      • Affects the hands and feet
      • Desquamation and fissuring
      • Lichenification due to repeated scratching or rubbing
      • Nail changes, such as pitting or ridging, in longstanding disease
  • Treatment
    • Avoid potential irritants
    • Gentle skin care with emollients
    • Hand protection
    • Topical corticosteroids
    • Topical calcineurin inhibitors for refractory cases or lichenified cases
    • Oral antihistamine for pruritus
    • Patch testing if contact allergy is suspected
