Atopic Eruption of Pregnancy

Atopic eruption of pregnancy is characterised by pruritus and rash (eruption) during the first and second trimester of pregnancy. It is the most common skin condition of pregnancy. The diagnosis is clinical.

It is more common in women with atopy or a family history of atopy.

  • Signs and symptoms
    • Pruritus
    • Eruptions may be on any body part
      • Eczematous lesions (48%): erythema interspersed with dry, scaly, excoriated areas
      • Papules (grouped or widespread)
      • Prurigo lesions (small, raised, hard nodular lesions)
      • Normal vitals
  • Differentials
  • Treatment
    • Symptoms resolve spontaneously following delivery
    • Oral antihistamines to relieve pruritus
    • Topical emollients, 1% menthol in aqueous cream, and steroid cream
