Polymorphic eruption of pregnancy

Polymorphic eruption of pregnancy – aka pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy – is a benign, self-limited skin condition that is characterised by erythematous papules and urticarial plaques during the third trimester or immediate postpartum period. It typically affects primigravidas.

  • Signs and symptoms
    • Erythematous papules and urticarial plaques
      • First appears in abdominal striae
      • Spreads to the buttocks, thighs, and upper extremities
      • Spares the periumbilical region, face, and mucosal surfaces
  • Treatment
    • Resolves postpartum without complications
    • Emollients and topical corticosteroids to relieve pruritus
    • Oral antihistamines for severe pruritus
